The drawdown is not weather. It is scheduled, it happens every year, and it still wrecks docks every year. Here is the sequence. Ameren starts lowering the lake after the season to make room for spring rain. The water under your dock drops a few inches a week. A dock with properly slacked cables rides down with it, uneventfully. A dock rigged tight for summer pool does not: the water leaves and the cables hold, and the dock ends up part-hanging, loading anchor points and frame welds in directions nobody designed for.
Then the ice arrives and adds its own version. Surface ice locks onto the flotation, the water keeps dropping under the ice, and the dock is now pinned to a sheet that is slowly settling. Frames rack. Hinges twist. Floats crack along their seams and start their slow leak. None of it is visible from the seawall in January. All of it is visible in April, which is why spring is sinking-dock season and why the busiest month for structural repair calls is the month the owners come back. Older dock stock, like a lot of what sits near Bagnell Dam and the Lake Ozark Strip, finds these weak points first.
And some winters bring the loud version. The storm lake old-timers still call the Snowpocalypse hit February 1-2, 2011: a statewide blizzard that dropped 12 to 20-plus inches of snow across mid-Missouri, closed Interstate 70 in both directions for the first time in its history, and piled enough wet snow on roofed docks around the lake that Water Patrol reports described docks flipping outright under the load. Several unmoored cruisers went down separately that same freeze, hulls cracked by frozen plumbing rather than snow weight, a reminder that winter finds more than one way to sink a boat. The docks that came through it shared one trait beforehand: someone had already knocked the snow off the roof before it became a problem, which is the same advice we give every heavy-snow winter since, not a one-time 2011 fix.
The numbers behind the drawdown

Cable slack is not a guess. A dock rigged with just enough play for the typical six-foot target has zero margin if a wet spring pushes Ameren toward the lower 651 limit. We rig for the nine-foot case, not the average one, because slack costs nothing extra in October and a hung dock costs a repair bill in March.
The prep visit, in order
- Loosen or extend the anchor cables. The dock must be able to ride down roughly six feet as the lake drops toward 654. Cables set for summer pool will hang the dock or tear anchor points.
- Check flotation before the ice, not after. A float already weeping in October is a corner underwater in March. Encapsulated floats get a look and a push test while the water is still warm enough to work.
- Inspect anchors, connections, and hinges. Winter loads work every fastener. Anything already worn goes into winter as the weak link, and winter finds weak links.
- Clear the deck and secure loose items. Furniture, kayak racks, and dock boxes become wind litter in a January front. Snow load math also starts with what is already on the roof.
- Plan for snow on roofed docks. Heavy wet snow sank docks across this lake in 2011. Know who is knocking snow off your roof panels when a foot lands, because the dock will not wait for spring.
When to do it
October into early December, before the lake is seriously down and long before ice. The visit itself is a few hours: cables, anchors, floats, hinges, deck. Most of what we find is minor and cheap to correct in the fall. The same finding in March, after a winter of working against a tight cable, is a welding job. If you are an out-of-state owner, this is the visit to schedule before you close the place up, and we send photos of what we found and what we changed.
Two things worth doing in the same visit, since someone is already out there. A lift canopy is a large flat surface that collects snow on a frame sized for wind, so it either comes off or goes into winter clean and tight with nothing pooling. And going into the cold months with a clean dock means less organic material sitting against the surface for months, and a structure you can actually inspect before the ice arrives.
