Every dock owner on this lake has watched a storm cross the main channel and done the math on their cables. Sometimes the math loses. The wind gets under a roof, the dock works its anchors like a dog on a leash, and something gives: a cable parts, a connection point tears, and the dock swings into the neighbor's slip or folds against the seawall. In winter the same story runs slower. Ice grips the dock, the drawdown pulls the water out from under it, and the frame racks quietly over weeks instead of loudly in an afternoon. The 2011 snow was the loud version: roofed docks all over the lake went down under fifteen inches of snow load, lifts and boats with them.
Either way, what you have afterward is a steel frame that is no longer square, flotation that took hits, cables of unknown remaining strength, and an insurance company that wants an itemized estimate before anything moves. That last part matters. Photograph everything from the seawall first, before any cleanup. Then call. What storm repair covers
- Re-squaring and welding the frame. A racked frame chews floats and hinges until it is trued. This is welding-barge work, and on a typical $900 to $6,000 storm repair it is most of the invoice.
- Anchor and cable replacement. A cable that survived a storm at 80 percent is a cable that fails in the next one. We replace pairs, not single sides, and re-tension for the season's water level.
- Float survey and swap. Impact cracks encapsulated floats along the seams. The listing shows up weeks later; the survey now is cheaper.
- Lift inspection. A storm that moved the dock moved the lift. Cradle alignment and mount points get checked as part of every storm job, not as a separate call. Details on the lift page.
- Walkway and hinge work. The shore connection takes the worst of it. Twisted gangways and torn hinge points are standard storm fare.
The insurance rhythm
Dock coverage varies by policy, and we are not your agent. What we can tell you: claims go smoother when the photos predate the cleanup, the estimate itemizes by component, and the temporary work (tie-off, temporary flotation) is billed as mitigation, separate from the repair. That is how we write it. If the dock is a total loss, we say that plainly too, because a rebuild quote pretending to be a repair helps nobody.
One more honest note: after a big blow, every crew on the lake is booked. Docks that are secured and stable get scheduled behind docks that are actively sinking. If yours is stable, we tell you where you are in line. If it is going down, it jumps the line. That triage is the same for everyone.
