Why lake docks break: Ameren drops the lake about six feet every winter, ice binds docks that should ride down, and one heavy snow can put a roofed dock on the bottom. 2011 proved it. Spring is when the damage surfaces.

Dock going down right now? Do this.

  1. Kill the dock power at the breaker. A submerged outlet can energize the water around the dock.
  2. Get the boat off the dock if you safely can. A sinking dock takes the lift and the boat with it.
  3. Take photos. Your insurer needs them, and so does our estimate. Do not walk the low corner.
  4. Call us. Temporary flotation and tie-off first, then the proper repair on a scheduled visit.

One corner of my dock is underwater. How fast does this get worse?
Faster than most owners expect. A dead float shifts load to its neighbors, they ride lower, waves top them, and the list accelerates. The boat and lift add weight exactly where you do not want it. Kill the dock breaker, get the boat off if you safely can, and call. Temporary flotation buys time; the float swap is the real fix.
What does dock repair cost at Lake of the Ozarks?
Most repairs land between $900 and $6,000. Small fixes start around $200. Replacement floats run $150 to $200 each installed, and a full dock replacement averages around $15,000. Lift repairs run $200 to $500 for minor work, more for tanks and structural jobs. You get your number in writing before work starts.
Do I need an Ameren permit for repairs?
Like-for-like repair of an existing permitted dock is normally fine. Changing the footprint, adding a slip, or altering the structure needs an Ameren permit amendment first, and only approved encapsulated flotation goes in the water. Someone felt a tingle in the water at our dock. What now?
Everyone out of the water immediately, and not toward the dock ladder. Kill the dock breaker at the panel. Do not swim there again until a licensed electrician has inspected and the GFCIs test clean. This lake takes shock hazards seriously for good reason. We handle dock structure; wiring belongs to an electrician.
