Stainless resists corrosion better and lasts longer in the right setting, but it has a habit of corroding from the inside out, which means a stainless cable can present clean while losing strength internally. On a component whose entire job is holding a boat above water, visible warning is worth more than a longer nominal life.

That is why most of what we install on this lake is galvanized. It is not the cheap answer. It is the one that tells you before it lets go.

Sheaves and drums, because cable rarely dies of natural causes

A cable that frays in one specific place did not simply get old there. Something is doing it. A seized sheave that no longer turns drags cable across a fixed surface instead of rolling it. A drum with a rough spot or a bad wrap crushes the lay. Replacing the cable and leaving the cause in place buys a season and then the new cable looks like the old one.

So a cable job that is done properly is a cable job plus an inspection of everything the cable touches. If the drum is part of a drive that is also binding, that is a drive problem showing up as a cable symptom, and fixing the cable alone would be treating a bruise.

Keeping cable alive between changes

Galvanized cable responds well to a light penetrating oil, spring and fall. It reduces friction between the individual wires inside the lay, preserves the galvanized coating, and cuts the abrasion between strands that does most of the internal damage. It is about 10 minutes of work twice a year and it measurably extends the interval. It does not turn a finished cable into a good one, and it is not a substitute for looking at it.

Worth knowing on this lake: the winter drawdown drops the water roughly 6 feet, and a lift sitting at an odd height or hanging in an unusual position through the cold months can load cable in ways summer never does. That is one reason cable damage so often surfaces in spring rather than when it happened. Cable checks belong in the same pass as the rest of winter preparation.

What it costs

Cable is priced by lift size, cable length and gauge, and access, and it is normally quoted as a set. Where it climbs is when the sheaves or drum need attention with it, which is common and which we will tell you before starting rather than after.
