Reading the noise

Lubrication is the boring answer, and it is usually the right one

The most common reason a lift drive dies early is lubrication: not enough of it, the wrong type, or oil that has been contaminated and left in place. It is unglamorous and it is genuinely the leading cause. A gearbox running on degraded or insufficient oil wears its gear faces steadily, quietly, and then fails in a way that looks sudden to the owner and looks entirely predictable once it is open.

The second cause worth naming is alignment. When the motor and the gearbox input shaft are not true to each other, every rotation loads bearings and gear teeth unevenly. Nothing sounds wrong at first. It just consumes the life of parts that should have lasted years longer. Both of these are why a drive that gets looked at on a cycle outlives one that gets attention only when it stops.
