The one people get wrong most often
A boat sitting crooked reads as a broken lift, and often the lift is fine. If the dock underneath has a float that has failed, the whole structure is tilted, and everything mounted to it tilts with it. Owners replace cables and chase lift adjustments trying to level a boat that is sitting exactly right relative to a dock that is not.
The check is quick. Look at the dock itself against the waterline rather than looking at the boat. If one corner of the structure is low, start there, because no amount of lift work will square a boat on a dock that is going down. That is a flotation repair, and it is usually the cheaper of the two conversations.
The seasonal one, which is not a fault at all
Between roughly October and February, plenty of lift calls on this lake are not repairs. Ameren draws the lake down about 6 feet toward a winter low near 654 feet, against a full pool of 660. A lift set for summer depth is suddenly working against water that is not there, and it behaves oddly in ways that look mechanical.
