The one people get wrong most often

A boat sitting crooked reads as a broken lift, and often the lift is fine. If the dock underneath has a float that has failed, the whole structure is tilted, and everything mounted to it tilts with it. Owners replace cables and chase lift adjustments trying to level a boat that is sitting exactly right relative to a dock that is not.

The check is quick. Look at the dock itself against the waterline rather than looking at the boat. If one corner of the structure is low, start there, because no amount of lift work will square a boat on a dock that is going down. That is a flotation repair, and it is usually the cheaper of the two conversations.

The seasonal one, which is not a fault at all

Between roughly October and February, plenty of lift calls on this lake are not repairs. Ameren draws the lake down about 6 feet toward a winter low near 654 feet, against a full pool of 660. A lift set for summer depth is suddenly working against water that is not there, and it behaves oddly in ways that look mechanical. We are a structural and mechanical crew. Motors, gearboxes, drums, cables, tanks, valves, bunks, frames, flotation, and the dock itself are ours. Wiring, breakers, panels, and shore power are not, and that boundary is not a formality on this lake. The lift will not go down. What is the most likely cause?
On an air-tank lift, a valve that is not venting. The tanks hold their air, the lift stays up, and nothing is actually broken in the way owners fear. On a cable lift, a lift that will not lower is more concerning, because it can mean the drive is jammed rather than idle. Either way, stop cycling it and describe exactly what it does when you press the switch.
My lift trips the breaker every time. Can you fix that?
No, and you should not keep resetting it. A breaker that trips is doing its job, and repeated tripping on a structure over water is exactly the situation that line exists to protect. That is a licensed electrician call, not ours. We work the mechanical side of lifts and we will tell you plainly when what you have is electrical.
The lift works but sits crooked. Is that serious?
It depends on what is uneven. Uneven cable take-up is an adjustment. A single failing flotation tank on an air lift is a repair. A dock that is itself listing makes a perfectly healthy lift look broken and is the one people misdiagnose most often. Which of the three it is normally takes one look rather than a guess.
How urgent is this really?
Anything with a burning smell, or a boat that is sitting in a way it should not be, is now rather than next week. A lift that is simply slow, noisy, or a bit out of level is real but schedulable. The expensive version of nearly every lift repair is the one that got run for another month after it started making a new noise.
